Augie at 18 months

We haven't taken many photos in recent days, so there's not much to share with you today.

I forgot to mention that Augie turned eighteen months on Wednesday! I forgot until the day was done, not that Augie would have noticed if I'd said or done anything. We had our eighteen-month appointment with the pediatrician on Friday, which was pretty much miserable for Augie. For some reason he hates being measured. Well, it's probably the whole thing - taking his clothes off, plopping him on the scale, trying to lay him flat on his back to measure his height. (For the record, he was 27.5 pounds but we aren't sure of his height because he wouldn't let us measure him. We think he's about 33-33.5 inches). The vaccination he got was the easiest part of the visit!

He's starting to talk a ton. He has at least fifteen words now, his most recent being "ON!", as in "Turn the light ON, Mom!". He usually yells and points to a light when he says it. Other fairly recent additions include keys (his favorite toy), cheese, and juice.

He continues to be helpful, as you can see from the first photo below. He especially loves helping us with the laundry, and whenever he takes an article of clothing off, he immediately runs to the washer to put it in. He use a red chair to let him help put things in the washer and move them to the drier, so he's also started running to the red chair and trying to drag it across the floor when he wants to do some laundry (read: knob twisting).

He's become very opinionated and has regular power surges. I blame his impatience on his father (seriously!) and his power surges on me. When he's very mad he walks around hitting things with an open palm, yelling either "NO!" or "ARH!"

Hanging out

We had a busy five days together, Augie and I. Now James is back from Norway and I'm going to try to recover.

Learning and practicing

Augie loves doing what we do. And he loves helping too. He puts his clothes in the washing machine after taking them off (with help), he unloads clean (and sometimes dirty) silverware from the dishwasher, and he's getting very good with following simple orders (put that carton back in the cupboard, put the instrument back in the basket).

Here are a couple things he's been practicing the past few days.

Reading a potty book while sitting on the potty (note: while he was doing a good job with our early potty learning efforts in Stockholm, we really slacked off when he started at preschool, so we're essentially back to square one now):

Trying to clip his toenails:

Trying to clip my toenails! The funny thing about these photos is that we aren't able to clip his nails - fingers or toes - anymore while he is awake. He refuses to hold still and tried to take the clippers from us. So now I sneak attack him while he's sleeping, but he still knows what do to!

Augie and Sierra

The day after the wedding we went back to the gorgeous reception venue for "Sunday Funday", a gathering of friends and family, food and lawn games. Augie reconnected with Sierra, and the two of them tried to get into trouble.

Yes, those are Budweisers.

Sierra noticed that the four cup holders in the golf cart were empty, so she set upon the task of filling them - while Augie took to the task of emptying them.

Exploring Easton

The wedding we attended was on Maryland's eastern shore. We spent the day of the wedding exploring the area, seeing the sights and playing on the playgrounds.

Dancing on the stage at the rehearsal dinner:

Keeping busy at 8am:

Exploring the docks and cannons of St. Michael's (James saved a dog while we were in St. Michael's: the dog arrived on a boat with his owners, and as they were pulling up to dock the dog tried to jump onto land but missed. James ran to the water, laid on his stomach, and reached down and yanked the dog out of the water. A hero! You'd think the owners would have at least offered him a drink!):

The reception was held at the groom's parents' house, a beautiful home on the water in Easton.

Asking for more grapes:

Climbing in the fire pit (good thing his pants were ash gray!):

Augie found a partner-in-crime at the wedding, a slightly older woman named Sierra. Pictures of some of their shenanigans to come tomorrow (and yes, Sierra's mom is pregnant, too):

Guzzling

I should have warned you that we were going to be gone for the weekend, and thus I wouldn't be posting. We went to a wedding (one of my very best friend's weddings!) on the eastern shore of Maryland. The weather was perfect, the scenery was gorgeous, and the wedding celebration was beautiful (at least, the bits of I got to see). Now James is off to Norway until Thursday, and Augie and I are on our own (which may mean that the infrequent posting continues for a few more days as I switch into survival mode).

I still have to unload the car (how do you unload a car after a weekend away when you have a toddler and live on the third floor of a building?), take a shower, and do some unpacking and it's already 9:14pm. So all you get today is one measly photo.

An afternoon in the park

Yesterday Augie and I went to explore a new park. It's a place we've driven by a hundred times but have never stopped to explore. We were lucky to make some new friends, and Augie had his first go at basketball.

Just in the last month Augie's really begun to notice kids and express interest in them. Today at the gym, as we walked out of the child care room (he led me right from the child care room to the front door of the gym all by himself!) we encountered two little girls on their way in, and he held his hand high and waved to them - a first for him, waving hello so boldly!

When Augie noticed that the other kids at the park were having a snack, he wanted in. The nanny and her charges were very kind to share their pretzels with us. It's always so strange - and so great - to see Augie interacting with other kids.

I'm sorry these pics are so far away, but this pregnant mama just wasn't going to get up!

Dandelions

Augie got his first lesson in dandelions while we were camping. You can't quite tell in this gif, but the first few times he tried, he just opened his mouth and stuck the dandelion - and all its fuzzies - right in!
