More painting

Augie and Baba got the paints out again the other day.

I love his focus face:

I don't think he enjoys Baba painting on his paper:

I really don't think he enjoys Baba infringing on his territory!

Oh - and here's a little Leif:

Finger painting

I have to admit, sheepishly, that I haven't been very proactive about doing arty stuff with Augie. It just sort of slips my mind - all the time.

But today I had the inspiration to pull out the finger paints and a dabbing brush and see how he'd react. He remained interested and focused for longer than I thought he would (probably because a bowl of water was involved). He asked what the colors were and repeated the names when we told him. He was more interested in splashing in the water and mixing the colors together in their containers than he was in putting paint on paper, but we weren't in it for a product. It was fun enough watching him explore.

Playing with crayons

Augie had his first-ever marathon sleep yesterday. We all went down for a nap at 3:30pm; James and I got up around 6pm, but we let Augie sleep on. And sleep he did! He got up at midnight for about two hours (of nursing, calmly walking around the house, and then climbing back into bed to put himself back to sleep), and then slept until 6am. I never believed my baby would sleep so much. I guess the early mornings (he has started getting up at 6am, whereas he used to wake closer to 7am) and the short naps at preschool have left him a little exhausted.

When James dropped him off at preschool today, he didn't even cry! Though now he's getting sick - a slight runny nose has turned into a rattling cough, and his voice is growing hoarse. He seems perfectly happy, though, so we won't worry.

Most exciting, for the first time ever, James put him to sleep for the night! I went to a meet-and-greet of the American Women's Club, which overlapped with Augie's bedtime. I left a few minutes early and rushed home so I could nurse him before he fell asleep (I nurse him every night; sometimes he falls asleep while nursing, while more often he stays awake a bit longer and puts himself to sleep after rolling around the bed for a while), but when I arrived home, the bedroom door was closed and it was quiet. A few minutes later James came out - Augie was asleep! I'm so proud of them both for doing it without me; it's the first time in 15.5 months I haven't been here when Augie went to bed.

This afternoon he sat down to draw for a bit. After some serious action drawing, which would make the action painters proud, he became much more interested in throwing the crayons on the floor.

The drawing itself, created by performing a manic side-to-side swinging action with a crayon clutched in his hand (I did the blue strip at the top):

Yellow crayon to the floor:

The teal crayon will not stand!

The magenta crayon will not stand!

The blue crayon will not stand!

Here's hoping a good night's sleep alleviates his cold symptoms.

9 months - Birthdays

Before I get to the photos, let me share with you my favorite thing that Augie is doing now. You know that we've been playing hide-and-seek with him for a while now. Recently he started taking the game one step further. It goes like this: I get his attention and then run behind something (like the couch), so he'll have to come find me. He'll start sprint-crawling toward where he saw you go (and you can hear him coming, his hands and feet slapping the floor, him grunting on the exhale with his exertion) - but as he nears me, rather than stopping to "find" me, he'll do a fly-by and just start running away! He might look back, a grin on his face, to see if I'm following, but off he goes, expecting me to follow him. He giggles and runs until he comes to a dead end, then he sits up and looks back at me, smiling. He knows I'm coming to get him! Sometimes he even tries to go farther (up the wall), but it never works, and Mama prevails.

What I love about this new variation of the game is that he started with something we taught him and, all on his own, took it to the next level. It's like he said, "oh yeah, you want me to come find you? Well then, you chase me!" I think it shows his playful creativity.

But on to the birthdays and the pictures...

Today, September 3, is the birthday of Augie's maternal grandfather, Bill and his paternal grandmother (Ah Mah) Terry. (It's also the birthday of my best friend Sabrina's daughter Maggie - she's one today! - and my high school friend Beth). Augie had his first artistic endeavor yesterday making gifts for his grandparents.

First, Baba had some camera shenanigans to play:

As you might guess, helping a 9-month old make art with finger paints is an all-hands-on-deck endeavor; James handled the canvases and the paint, I handled the baby and his hands and feet, leaving no one to take pictures of the actual art-making. We got pictures of the artist with his masterpieces, though:
